Animal owners consider their pets to be members of the family. Coping with the death of a pet may be just as difficult as grieving the loss of a family member. Northwood Funeral Home is aware of the emptiness and heartbreak you may experience after losing a cherished pet.

Techniques To Cope With The Loss Of A Pet

It is difficult to accept this loss. Here are some suggestions for surviving this difficult period and coping with your loss:

  • The loss of a dog or cat may be distressing, and many individuals retreat into themselves during this time. Others opt to repress their emotions to cope with sadness, but it's not a wise approach. Permit yourself to accept your loss and experience grief. Both you and your pets deserve this.
  • Only another caring pet parent can truly understand your suffering, so find someone that has pets or has faced a similar loss. They will be reassuring, courteous, and compassionate towards you, which can help you manage your grief. They will engage you in conversation and give guidance on how to deal with your loss.
  • You may also make a memorial in your pet's honour, so you have something tangible to remember them by. You could, for instance, plant flowers in your yard or construct a little memorial in their remembrance.
  • Create a special photo album containing photos of your pet.
  • After losing a beloved pet, you can implement the above healing and coping techniques. The road to recovery will not be straightforward, but connecting with someone who shares your loss may provide solace.
  • Find strategies to divert your attention away from your sadness to help you recover from your loss.
