What to Expect During a Funeral Service

It can sometimes be challenging to interact with other people when you attend a funeral. It is common to feel unsure of what to expect.

Some Things To Consider

We at Northwood Funeral Home understand that some people are unsure about the proper funeral etiquette, and that is why we want to discuss a few things that may help to ease your mind before attending a funeral.

A funeral is generally a somber event, but some families conduct a celebration of life, which is casual and more focused on the great life the person lived. Once you arrive at the funeral home, or place of service, take a look around to see what the atmosphere is like.

  • Always be punctual and reach the venue 10-15 minutes before. You'll want to make sure you have time to see the family and find a seat before services begin.

  • Rushing can add unneeded stress on yourself and it is also a good way to ensure you have enough time to find a parking spot.

  • Some guests at a funeral will be grieving and they will express their sorrow in different ways. Some people are more vocal or show their emotions while others are subdued and restrained. Keep in mind that every person will show their emotions differently and there is no right or wrong way to how you are feeling.

  • When you walk up to speak with the family, take a few seconds to understand what their overall state of mind is and how they are interacting with others around them. Offer your condolences accordingly and keep the interaction brief. If you are searching for words to say, a simple ‘my condolences’ is always appreciated.

If you would like any further information about our services or are interested in pre-planning, please call Northwood Funeral Home to learn more about how we can help.
