Obituary of Elio DeSumma

Please share a memory of Elio to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

With heavy hearts we announce the peaceful passing of our Dad and Nonno Elio at the Algoma Residential Community Hospice. Elio is now reunited with his beloved wife Nina, after 33 years apart. Dear father of Luciana, Susan Venier (Fabio), Rita, Toni McEwen (Don), and Sam (Cathy).  Cherished Nonno of Christina and Nicole Venier, Camille DeSumma, Nicholas and Sarah McEwen.  Son of the late Sebastiano and Gloria DeSumma.  Brother of the late Maria, late Concetta, late Pietro, all of Italy.  Brother-in-law of the late Lina Piraino (Peter) and late Vera Severini (late Salvatore).  Loving Uncle of Sam, Anthony and Frank Piraino and Joe, Robert and Carlo Severini and families.

Our Dad and Nonno enjoyed family, hard work, conversation and a good book. Most of all he enjoyed spending quality time with his family at camp.  During an almost 30-year retirement he was able to travel back to his homeland, Italy, nearly 20 times but his favourite place to be was “Havilland Bay”.  His passion for cars, gardening, salami making and wine making will live on forever.  We take great comfort that he is now reunited with our Mother and Nonna.

Due to COVID restrictions, a private service will be held. Interment at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery.  Memorial donations to the Sault Area Hospital Foundation or ARCH would be greatly appreciated. To share a memory of Elio or send a condolence to his family, please visit the Northwood Funeral Home website.

A special thank you to all the health care workers who helped our Dad along his journey - Dr. Grosso, Dr. Jonusaitis, Dr. Bignell, and Nurse Jodi McCaig.  Many thanks to Para Med nurses Claudine, Teresa and Sue.  Thank you to the PSWs who provided daily care for our Dad especially the long term caregivers Jaz and Colleen. Special thanks to family friend Peter DeAngelis who provided comfort to our Dad with many home visits and to Nonno’s in-house personal barber, Gino Polito. At the end of his journey, we thank Dr. Buehner and the caring and compassionate staff at ARCH for making his last day peaceful. Arrangements entrusted to Northwood Funeral Home Cremation and Reception Centre (942 Great Northern Rd, 705-945-7758).
